OUR RECENT STORIES

Preschool Education
From the moment children are born in the poor families or in slums, they face the daily hardship of malnutrition, lack of healthcare
and education. They do not get education to be prepared for primary school and to be competitive in society. When one group of children goes to school, another group of children flood the streets to look for work. For these children school is out of reach. They are burdened with adult responsibilities from an early age. They work for their own survival and for the financial survival of their families or the people they are living with. PLSKS strives to work for these children by extending preschool learning with safe and protected learning environment. Here children are taught basic education along with social values, patriotism and participate in various extra-curricular activities. Preschool attendance also improves children’s enrollment and retention rates and academic performance in primary school and beyond.

Coaching
The children who are going to school after grade one or five are becoming drop out as the family cannot manage the
educational expenses and not able to ensure the quality of education by giving them coaching through admitting them in the coaching center or home based tutor. So PLSKS creates an opportunities to provide free coaching type education for the poor children going to school with a view to ensuring their higher education. PLSKS conducts this education at PLSKS learning centers after preschool sessions. PLSKS not only facilitates these students with quality education along with preparing homework and problem solving but also teaches social values and helps them participate in various extra-curricular activities.

Healthy Meals for Children
Healthy diets have profound effect on children’s sense of mental and emotional wellbeing, helping to prevent
conditions such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia etc. PLSKS strives to provide healthy meals for children of the orphanage located at Bangla Bazar and Kundal area in Saidpur Upazila. In the orphanage most of the children are from helpless poor family but they are very meritorious. Neither the families of the talented students nor the orphanage could provide proper nutritious food for their children due to financial constraint.

Skill Development Training
The world is forwarding towards tremendous advancement of Information and Communication Technology.
It is a great challenge for us to go hand in hand with this rapid advancement. However, we have huge working population and we can transform it into human capital through various skill development initiatives. PLSKS organizes the unemployed and provides them training on various trades. In collaboration with Department of Women affairs, Department of Social Services and Department of Youth Development, PLSKS conducts various skill development training for unemployed village women on embroidery, block printing, tailoring, fashion bag making, beautician training etc. As a result they are being self-employed and contributing to their family income. PLSKS is going to organize basic computer education and digital literacy training for the unemployed youth with a view to paving the way towards utilizing these skills in the future.

Mental Health and Psychosocial Support
PLSKS runs monthly wellbeing sessions with women and adolescent groups on topics such as managing
negative emotions and relaxation classes. The program is also conducted with a mental health screening (GHQ questionnaire) with all adults who were interested to engage in the program. Adults who are identified with moderate to severe mental health symptoms were referred to PLSKS’s service. A collaboration with partners are to be developed to ensure free access to professional counseling, psychiatric consultation and medication support for urban poor communities where required.

Emergence Relief and Disaster Management
The projects working area is in Nilphamari district where thousands of poor people live with constant threat of Tista River.
Nilphamari district stands on the most low-lying area which is geographically located on the north of the Himalayan mountain range approximately 568 kilometers. As a result it is continuously prone to the natural disasters like flood, river bank erosion, storms, drought, cold wave, cyclone and earthquake threat. PLSKS provides emergency humanitarian support for flood affected peoples at Dimla, Jaldhaka and Pakistani refugees (Urdu speaking) peoples who live in 22 camps in Saidpur area. Most of the poor people of Muslim community cannot celebrate any festival. Being as a local humanitarian development organization PLSKS is closely working with these poor people providing food and meat support during the occasion of holy Eid-ul Fitre and Eid-ul Azha.

Institutional development and capacity building
During the year 2021, PLSKS developed 20 female groups/community institutions at the camp areas
of Bashbari, Mistrepara, Newbabupara, Hatikhana, Durgamils, Kazipara, Nechukolone, Golahat and Dhalapir Abashon at Saidpur upazila in Nilphamari district. Each group comprises 20 to 25 members from different households. Group members select their group leader through democratic approach. PLSKS develops institutional capacity of such groups as well as the group leaders through regular meeting, training, coaching and mentoring. PLSKS on the other hand, develops skills of the group members for developing their individual and group based income generation trough providing them training, motivation, awareness building etc. The weekly meeting is being conducted regularly by the group leaders and the organizers of PLSKS where their need based issues are discussed and addressed. The meetings also include their Income Generation Activity (IGA) planning, savings practice and other development issues for example women and gender development, health and sanitation, education etc. Now the groups are in the position of practicing their savings to be utilized in their income generation resulting in the economic security and livelihood development.

Women Empowerment
PLSKS aims to empower women and enable them to be involved in development activities using a
programmatic approach by providing access to health, education, jobs, training, and decision-making power. This program also enables women to be financially independent, develop a strong network and find an opportunity that significantly reduces poverty, gender disparity and domestic violence. PLSKS has ensured a safe, gender equal and healthy work environment for all its employees in the field and the office. Alongside implementing organization wide gender responsive policies and best practices, focus group discussions and counseling have been undertaken at the branch level. The purpose of these discussions is to propagate the narrative on workplace obstacles and explore appropriate solutions.

Community Building
Inadequate social networks and trust within communities are key barriers to livelihood opportunities, access to public and
private services, and ensuring sustainable development. In this design phase, priorities include improving community and family bonding, women empowerment, social security and addressing child marriage and violence within households and communities. Monthly sessions are designed to identify and mobilize communities, address social issues like access to education, child marriage and fire safety and bring together women and adolescent groups to engage in meaningful activities within a safe space. In each location, Steering Committees are formed to actively co-support and lead endeavors of the community building stream. These committees are essential to ensure ownership of initiatives by encouraging community members to volunteer their time, and occasionally contribute towards the cost of arranging events.

Climate Change Adaptation Programs
One of objectives of PLSKS is to contribute to build a climate resilient nation through effective, community-based
adaptation strategies. By reimagining abandoned, forsaken areas into green centers of life and recreation. Bangladesh is widely considered to be at the forefront of climate change and disaster impacts. PLSKS’s Climate Change Adaptation Programme is a one-stop platform to deliver, high-impact, gender responsive, and socially inclusive climate solutions. The programme is being implemented at Saidpur Upazila in Nilphamari. This program is supporting climate resilient livelihood opportunities and green skills development and developing long-term nature based solutions for disaster risk reduction, while creating opportunities for cohabiting people and biodiversity. The program focuses on four areas of intervention – access to fresh water, healthcare, sustainable livelihood and nature-based solutions. Since climate change impacts livelihood, safe drinking water, food security, housing and overall wellbeing, this program aims at reducing vulnerability and increasing resilience in climate affected communities.
